If your desire is to play good golf and lower your handicap, you have to have a good grasp of the fundamentals of golf. You will need a good golf swing as well. To understand what I mean by good golf swing, take as an example, any of today’s top professional players as a model. Solid iron-a-way shots are the result of having a solid golf swing.

Here are two drills to help you hit solid iron-a-way shots.

1. By cultivating the technique of hitting the ball late in the downswing, you generate the power and accuracy needed to play the iron-a-ways well every time. But how do you practice a movement which happens so quickly? I like to use a broom handle. Grip it with each hand separately, with the hands spaced about three inches apart.

Swing the handle, as you would a club, to waist height. Pause it there, then feel the right arm drive the handle down and through the imaginary ball. Follow through as you would with a real club.

You will also notice a whooshing sound as you whip the broom handle down and through the swing. What you are trying to do here is memorize this action so you can replicate it during your actual swing.

2. Practice hitting iron-a-way shots with both feet together. This will remind you of the role the hands and arms play in contributing to the swing. The key test is whether you lose your balance playing these shots. If you do, the body is contributing too much.

I hope these two tips help you to hit solid iron-a-way shots
